Wire EDM, or wire electrical discharge machining, is a process that uses a continuously moving metallic molybdenum wire to generate sustained pulsed electrical discharges between the wire and the workpiece, thereby achieving material removal and shaping. The electrode wire in this process shares the characteristic of multiple cuts with slow-wire EDM and can also be regarded as a fast‑wire system capable of repeated use. The quality of medium‑speed wire EDM falls between that of the other two types of wire EDM, yet its cutting speed exceeds that of fast‑wire EDM. With advances in technology and improved control systems, its performance has now approached that of slow‑wire EDM, making it one of the most widely used wire EDM machines today.

Wire EDM It is an electrical discharge wire‑cutting process that uses a continuously moving metallic molybdenum wire to generate sustained pulsed spark discharges between the wire and the workpiece, thereby achieving material removal and shaping. The electrode wire shares the characteristics of both multi‑pass cutting and slow‑wire EDM, and can also be regarded as a fast‑wire EDM system capable of multiple cuts.

The quality of wire EDM falls between that of the other two types of electrical discharge machining, but its cutting speed is higher than that of the fast‑wire type. With advances in technology and improved control systems, its performance has now approached that of the slow‑wire type, making it one of the most widely used EDM machines today.

 Wire EDM

Wire EDM The principle is as follows: The distance between the wire electrode and the workpiece is adjusted by the machine tool’s feed‑servo system to maintain an appropriate discharge gap. When the applied pulse voltage reaches the breakdown voltage of the dielectric fluid in this gap, a discharge occurs, raising the temperature in the localized micro‑region to tens of thousands of degrees Celsius. This causes the metal at that location to melt or even vaporize, and under the force of the resulting explosion, the molten material is ejected into the dielectric fluid, which carries it away from the discharge zone. As a result, a tiny crater forms on the workpiece surface. By repeating this process, the electrode’s shape is gradually etched into the part’s surface.

Medium-speed wire EDM boasts multiple cutting capabilities, a simple structure, low cost, excellent machining performance, and reduced material consumption. During operation, the wire‑cutting speed, pulse parameters, and power can be adjusted within the control system to achieve precise process control. Compared with high-speed wire EDM, medium-speed wire EDM offers a broader range of applications, greater convenience, and a more user‑friendly interface. The advent of wire‑cutting technology has marked a true revolution in the industry, addressing quality shortcomings in die‑making processes while lowering production costs. Consequently, medium‑speed wire EDM combines the advantages of both fast wire EDM and conventional wire cutting.

Wire EDM It is also a type of wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) machine. Its operating principle involves using a continuously moving molybdenum wire as the electrode; through pulsed spark discharges, the metal is eroded and the workpiece is cut. The quality of the machined part falls between that of other methods, which is why it is referred to as medium-speed wire EDM. More precisely, medium-speed wire EDM is an upgraded version of high-speed wire EDM—think of it as high-speed wire EDM capable of multiple cuts. However, its cutting speed is not slower than that of high-speed wire EDM; in fact, it is higher. Only by reducing the cutting speed during repeated passes can the desired cutting results be achieved. At that point, when average efficiency is calculated, the machining quality approaches that of conventional wire EDM. The wire feed rate is automatically controlled by the system and can be adjusted as needed.
